Andros Island is the largest island in the Bahamas chain and is widely regarded as the bonefishing capital of the world. It offers ample opportunities to catch big bonefish, making it a popular destination for anglers. Andros is also considered the birthplace of Bahamian fly fishing for bonefish, and it was here that the "crazy charlie" fly was developed by bonefish guide Charlie Smith. The island is made up of three separate islands, divided by bights (wide channels) and known as North, Middle, and South Andros.
On South Andros anglers have access to the southern tip, a vast & wild bonefish wilderness considered the jewel of the Bahamas and one of the best bone fisheries on the planet! Anglers staying on South Andros can also fish the southwest side of Andros, another beautiful bonefish mecca where there is absolutely no development or lodges of any kind.
Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge, run by American Bill Howard, has been taking guests since 2002. Bill runs a tight ship and the lodge has a relaxed feel, with great food, comfortable rooms, well-maintained flats skiffs, and excellent guides. The lodge underwent a complete renovation, including new landscaping, boats, and a building with additional rooms.
When you visit Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge on South Andros, you'll enjoy easier access to the magnificent bonefish habitat in the south end. During a six-day trip, you'll get no less than an extra day of fishing due to the lodge's proximity, compared to lodges located north of Mars Bay where guests have to spend more time on long a boat ride rather than fishing.
